CHAPTER TEN

When Dani got to the office on Tuesday Stephen told her, “Ashley wants you to stop by her office when as soon as you can.”

“Sure. Tell her I’ll be right in.” She found her partner up to her elbows in files. “Hey,” Dani said, “What’s up?”

“Just another day in fucking paradise,” Ashley said. “How was your weekend? You guys have a good time?”

“Wonderful, really. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other better, and our night out was perfect. How was your weekend?”

‘Same old shit. David was on duty the whole time, so I was hauling the kids around everywhere. Not much of a fucking holiday.

“I wanted to let you know,” Ashley said, looking back down at the papers on her desk, “Lyle Doherty is sponsoring some kind of fund-raising dinner next week. It’ll be on Saturday in Raleigh. I made a reservation for you to represent us so you’ll need to stay over there until that Sunday. I’ll put it on your calendar.”

“Sorry, can’t do it,” Dani said.

“What do you mean you can’t,” Ashley said, looking up sharply. “It’s important to our client so it’s important to us. We need to be represented. You’ll have to be there.”

“No, I won’t. I already have plans for Saturday. I’m going to Omaha that weekend. I’m meeting Treece’s sister that Saturday. You’ll just have to cancel that reservation.”

“But Dani, we always give our clients whatever they want and need. That’s the secret of our success. You never put your fucking personal life ahead of that.”

“I’ve never had a fucking personal life before, Ashley. I do now. This is important to Treece and it’s important to me. I’ll be in Omaha.” Dani tried to keep her anger out of her voice, but she knew Ashley could hear it. “If it’s so important that we be represented at this whatever it is benefit, you go. Oh wait, you can’t go because of your personal life. Hmm. Guess we’ll send Stephen. Surely he doesn’t have a personal life. But whoever goes, it won’t be me this time.” With that Dani turned and walked out of the office, barely refraining from slamming the door behind her.

When she got to her desk, Dani sat and fumed. What has gotten into Ashley? What’s so wrong about me having a personal life? I shouldn’t have to give up everything I want just because Ashley thinks something is important. She must have known I’d be going to see Treece soon. Did she do this on purpose? She couldn’t be jealous could she? After trying, and failing, to read one of the reports on her desk, Dani got up and paced around her office. Surely all Ashley was trying to do was please a client. Of course she hadn’t planned something just to keep her and Treece separated. And Dani had never backed out of a commitment before, even though she had not been the one to make it. But Ashley needed to know that right now Treece came first.
